Soccer Word

Soccer may be the simplest game there is. You need a ball and a patch of grass, maybe two backpacks for a goal, and it's played on every continent by kids in the street and pros in packed stadiums alike. Then there's the moment everyone waits for: the quick give-and-go, a shot curling past the keeper's fingertips, and the net rippling. This piece puts it all in a single word, with SOCCER in squared-off block letters and the O replaced by a ball whose panels are cut right through. The sign is cut by hand from one thin sheet, then given a hammered finish in black or silver with a finely grained surface. At about 21.75 inches wide, 5 inches tall and roughly a pound, it stays put with a few small nails, mounting strips, Velcro dots or a pair of magnets. Hang it over a striker's bed, along a playroom wall, or among the medals and team photos in a family room, or pair it with other sport words for a house full of players. It also makes a fun gift for a keeper who just made the travel team, a captain heading into senior year, or the parent who has driven to every away game.
